Guilty Pleasures

One of the newer blogs in my nightly must-read list is Breakfast at Toast and earlier this week I adored her “guilty pleasures” post as inspired by vmac + cheese and things that sparkle. So, here’s my attempt. Enjoy!

Guilty Pleasure

1.) The snooze button on my alarm. I use it no less than three times most mornings, and I set my alarm early enough to fit in as many “snoozes” as possible.

2.) Putting on pajamas as soon as I get home from work, no matter how early that time may be. For example, if I head home after a 2 p.m. meeting to work from home the rest of the day, I am in pajamas within moments of walking through the door, even if I have to get redressed later.

3.) Sweets. Chocolate, ice cream, cookies — it doesn’t really matter. I have to finish lunch and dinner with a “sweet treat” no matter how full I am.

candy candy candy CANDY candy

4.) Home-alone eating habits. When Mike is gone, I have the weirdest eating habits and I absolutely LOVE it. Dinner usually consists of the following in a three or four hour window: wine, string cheese, some hummus, a few chips, more string cheese and wine, sweet treats.

5.) Social media. Blogging, Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Yelp — I crave and need them all. Mike, our friends and even my family poke fun at how obsessed I am with being online but I don’t care. I wish I needed less sleep so that I could blog (and read blogs) more!

twitter

6.) Shopping. Not online, because I hate the return process, but real, old-fashioned pounding the pavement at the mall and going in and out of all the stores. I love shoes and handbags. I don’t think I’ll ever have enough “fun” jewelry or accessories like scarves. BORN. TO. SHOP.

7.) Wine. Mainly reds, but crisp cold whites have grown on me given the Colorado summer heat. I dream about having a wine cellar one day, or even having the time/money to take a wine course to teach me more about what I love so much.

Vino

8.) Bad television. Yep, I am part of the reason the Housewives, Kardashians and The Situation continue to get paid. There is something about horrific reality television that let’s me escape and “turn off” after even the most demanding day. Some people read novels while others clean and tackle personal to-do lists. I choose Housewives…which is one of the reasons I am hoping we decide to cancel our cable this fall.

bad TV

9.) Paying full price for things. I love a good deal, but I hate deal-hunting, shopping around and digging through sale racks. I like to grab what I want quickly and don’t have much patience once my mind is set on a purchase. I probably throw away a lot of money each year thanks to my inability to bargain hunt. I wish I inherited my mom’s coupon and sale shopping habits.

10.) Cuddling with Kona in bed. He sheds and is 85 lbs. I complain that there is hair everywhere, yet each morning when he stares at me with those puppy eyes, I cannot resist a few minutes with him while I hit the snooze button.

I’m dying to hear…what are YOUR guilty pleasures?

Splurge: Stella & Dot Necklaces

Last week I had the pleasure of attending a clothes exchange and Stella & Dot party, all rolled into one. Plus there was wine. What more does a girl need?

I treated myself to two new Stella & Dot pieces. Going into fall, dressing up plain sweaters and long-sleeved t-shirts is a must. So, my eye was on the lookout for necklaces.

Renegade Necklace (Credit: Stella & Dot)

I purchased the shorter, spiked gold necklace in this picture called the Renegade Cluster. I love that it has a bit of edge yet would still be client-appropriate when paired with a cardigan and pants or a skirt and tights.

I had my eye on this piece all night and tried it on no less than a dozen times. I own nothing like it, and love the fact that the colors will match with so many of my fall wardrobe staples. The mix of the rope cord and resin beads is unique, but not so over-the-top that you have to wait for weeks before wearing it again. I cannot wait for this to arrive on my doorstep.

Have you shopped Stella & Dot before? The pieces are not the cheapest on the block, but they are very on-trend and I rely on my pieces time and time again for adding that extra “oomph” to my plainer tops and dresses.

The next Stella & Dot necklace I’d love to own is…

Marrakesh Bib Necklace (Credit: Stella & Dot)

I tried this on a few times at the party! It is super comfortable and I don’t own anything in this color, yet I am always wishing I had grey shoes or a grey necklace to match with my black and navy outfits. I love how the satin ribbon makes the sequins and chains totally soft and girlie.

What jewelry kicks your fall wardrobe up a notch?

One Rug. Huge Makeover.

We live in a small duplex, so even the slightest change or addition to any room instantly gives it an entirely different feel. Sadly, Kona had a “rough” day a few months ago, and our living room area rug did not survive. A new rug has been on our list for months, but the steep costs of rugs at Crate & Barrel, West Elm and other trendy spots kept me from making the purchase.

A few people urged us to try American Furniture Warehouse and we finally made time this weekend. Luckily for us, the store was having a massive anniversary sale and prices were nearly slashed in half. We scored a killer rug for just $79 as well as a brand new dresser–our very first piece of furniture to ever come assembled! More on that in a second blog post.

While my colleague and friend Carissa is currently on a wardrobe makeover (follow her closet updating journey at I Dream of Diapers), I’ve been bitten by the home makeover bug. If anything, I mainly need to improve my attitude about our humble abode because we’re in a killer Denver neighborhood, and most importantly, have put ourselves in a good position to save money toward a down payment.

But there are “rugs here” and “chairs there” types of changes that don’t have to cost us a lot in order to make our space more functional and comfortable. Next week I am taking my first-ever “staycation” and I know a trip to the Container Store and HomeGoods are in order.

What small purchase or DIY project has resulted in an instant facelift for a room in your home?

Covet: Kitchen Carts

Our kitchen is small. Like, take two medium-sized steps to walk across it small. But it’s cozy and we have been pretty darn effective at keeping it organized.

But lately, as I start to cook and bake more, I’m craving additional counter space. This has prompted me to look at movable kitchen carts and with all the different sizes now available, I think a small one on wheels would give us the extra storage and food prep space I’m craving.

The Crate & Barrel cart (first picture) is a definite splurge, but the others are somewhat reasonable and I’ll be keeping my eyes open for a sale.

For those of you living in small spaces, how do you create extra space in your kitchen?

Pumpkin Bundt Cake

Despite the 85 degree temps in Denver this weekend, I was determined to channel fall and decided to do so via baking. First up? My first bundt cake–a simple pumpkin bundt cake recipe courtesy of AllRecipes.com. What sold me was the yellow cake mixture (I was too lazy to bake from complete scratch) and the interesting butterscotch addition.

The mixture was ready within minutes and our house smelled amazing. We have not enjoyed it yet but I know it’s going to be delicious with either vanilla ice cream or simple whipped cream.

What comfort dish or dessert are you craving in anticipation of the temperatures falling?

Weekly Favorites from Blog Land ~ Sept. 25

fall

The arrival of fall has dominated the blogosphere this week and I’ve stumbled upon so many gorgeous pictures of fall-inspired fashion as well as mouth-watering recipes for baked goods with pumpkin, apples and plenty of spices.

A few not-to-miss posts from this week include…

A fall baking collage by Breakfast at Toast that makes you want to run to Williams-Sonoma and buy everything to make bundt cakes and apple turnovers.

Shoppings My Cardio made me drool for a Botkier Brinks shoulder bag.

Good Life (For Less) has made me rethink cords. I’ve never been a big fan but the colored pair she shows are so chic and seem extremely versatile for fall.

Fall colors are not just about oranges, reds and browns. Loving. Living. Small. shares beautiful fall inspiration with bright yellows and vibrant purples.

And last but not least, my colleague and friend Carissa, who blogs at I Dream of Diapers, has a wonderful post about our clothes exchange and Stella & Dot party that she hosted on Thursday night. I scored two awesome sweaters and a cozy chocolate brown hoodie. All three are sure to become my new fall staples, and you want to know the best part? They were free! I also treated myself to two new Stella & Dot necklaces (picture to come soon).

What about fall inspires you?

Fall Fashion: Scarves

In addition to my brand spankin’ new blog design (thanks to DesignerBlogs for the clean, classic look that I won’t easily tire of, plus the help to transition from Blogger to WordPress), all day I’ve been super excited at the prospect of fall, and the fun cooler weather inevitably brings for getting dressed in the morning. In particular, I rely a lot on colorful scarves to breathe new life into the same neutral long-sleeved shirts and sweaters I recycle year after year when attempting not to break the bank on fall/winter shopping.

This year I’d love to wrap one (or more) of these around my neck…

TRICOLOUR SCARF (Credit Zara.com)

This Zara scarf would provide endless options for dressing up work outfits (think shift dresses and suits) as well as jeans with blazers on the weekends. I am a sucker for red and love that you can easily pair rich chocolate brown or black accents as needed.

Simple, basic and timeless. From sweats and boots on a Saturday to dark jeans and a cable knit sweater on Thursday at the office, this scarf will get a ton of wear from fall through spring.

Entwined Intarsia Loop (Credit: Anthropologie.com)

While a definite splurge, this “funks up” jeans and a sweater on the weekend (a struggle in cold weather when you are trying to be practical yet still stylish) and can also add a fun, bohemian vibe to a Saturday/Sunday “we were out too late last night” outfit.

I need to get my fall/winter self-imposed shopping allowance in order because the temperatures are beginning to change here in Denver, which makes me wonder…

What fall/winter accessories do you rely on for updating your practical (aka mundane) cold-weather wear?

Vacation Stalking

Fall is knocking on Colorado’s door, which means winter is just a few blocks away. I’m actually looking forward to it all, but after my first full Colorado winter last year I know that by March I’ll be craving some sunshine and tank tops.

Which is why after boots, coats and sweaters, my evening online “stalking” of things I want has begun to include beachfront vacations for Mike and me this winter (within reasonable flying distance). If I win the lotto this fall, here are a few places we could go on our winnings:

Do you escape anywhere in winter? If yes, where? And if not, where do you dream about escaping to this year?
