Pin of the Week: Breakfast

Brunch is a meal I love, though I don’t indulge nearly often enough because I a.) hate cooking it myself and b.) can’t convince Mike to go out for it very often. But, when I saw this frittata awesomeness on Pinterest I immediately wanted to invite over friends this weekend for a feast (complete with mimosas of course).

Sadly, this weekend is nearly booked but I would love to host an outdoor brunch for a few friends before summer is over. This will absolutely be on the menu.

What fresh summer produce are you cooking with right now, and is a summer brunch on your hosting to-do list?

New Obsession: Chloe and Isabel

I rarely ever look at my Klout Perks but last week, I decided to clean up my Klout notifications. I am so glad I did! I was awarded 35% off to Chloe and Isabel, a chic and affordable jewelry line similar to Stella & Dot. I actually hadn’t heard of Chloe and Isabel until the Klout Perk arrived in my inbox so hats off to some great branding and audience evaluation on their part!

I purchased this simple piece and with the discount, the total was only $28, including shipping. It arrived super fast and in a cute little pouch. I still prefer Stella & Dot’s boxes because they are so nice for traveling and storage, but this one was still nice.

I can’t wait to keep a closer eye on this brand, as I love adding affordable and fun jewelry pieces to my closet in lieu of pricier clothes and shoes that I am trying to stay away from right now.The necklace I chose is really decent quality for the price, and I know I’ll get a ton of use out of it when dressing up plain summer tanks and sun dresses.

Have you purchased anything from Chloe and Isabel yet?

Pin of the Week: Cocktail Hour

It’s really hot in Denver and the forecast doesn’t show any relief for the next five days. That’s why summer cocktails, like the blueberry lavender mojito below, are so tempting. Not only is it pretty to look at, I am really into lavender right now ever since destroying a box of lemon and lavender shortbread cookies from Whole Foods a few weeks ago.

I might just have to whip up a batch this weekend when the kids go to bed (not my kids…Mike and I are babysitting our twin nieces and nephew from Saturday morning to Sunday evening. Wish us luck!).

Happy weekend friends!

Colored Denim

I’ve been lusting after a pair of colored skinny jeans for months but until last week, the perfect pair eluded me. I am a J Brand loyalist but for whatever reason, their colored selections weren’t doing it for me. On a whim I ran into Roxy in Cherry Creek (our best only legit shopping neighborhood in Denver) while killing extra time before a dinner with girlfriends. Instead of answering the sales clerk’s question, “can I help you find something?” with, “nope, just looking…” I responded, “actually yes. I want to try on colored jeans.”

She led me to a wall full of selections and I felt overwhelmed, instantly regretting my decision to have her help me. But she quickly narrowed down my choices to a few Rich & Skinny suggestions based on my body type. Personally, I despise the brand name – it sounds so pretentious – but I decided to give them a try anyway.

Once I slipped these bad boys on I quickly got over the name of the jeans. I knew I had found a new brand of jeans to love, and that’s no easy feat.

I did not go with the color pictured above but the website no longer shows the pair I purchased (color is Foam, shown here on a pair of shorts). The jeans are extremely comfortable and even after a full day of wear, they keep 99% of their shape. That is something J Brand can’t really claim, at least for the styles I own currently.

I’m tempted to go back and try on a pair in white, as I am LOVING the white jean + chambray shirt look for summer. It is clean and classic for work or weekend wear, and I am all about maximizing wardrobe purchases these days.

Have you given in to the colored denim trend?

Wordless Wednesday: Don’t Leave Me

Covet: Elizabeth and James Silk Dress

We are attending a few weddings this summer so I’m on the hunt for one – two perfect dresses. Does anyone agree with me that shopping for dresses to wear as a guest is super stressful? I of course steer clear of anything white, cream, off white, etc., but then I also worry about showing up in the same color as the bridesmaids, or being “that guest” whose dress was too short, too tight, or too [fill in the blank].

I probably worry more than the average nuptials party-goer (no surprise there) but it’s out of respect and love for the bride. Which is why I really need to get off by butt and into some stores to start my search. The first wedding is one month away in Santa Barbara!

One frock captured my attention last week via some online browsing but the price is really steep. Like, we could finish off the guest room and still have some leftover money for a rug upstairs kind of steep. But c’mon, wouldn’t you covet this dress too if you knew it would be PERFECT for both weddings this summer?

I’ve never tried anything from the Elizabeth and James line but it always looks gorgeous. Just the right blend of chic, trendy and classic. I adore the cut as the length in the back adds elegance while the front keeps it young and flirty.

What dresses have you been coveting lately, and if they would be perfect for outdoor weddings in Santa Barbara AND Colorado, would you be so kind as to share the love?! I’ll owe ya.

Pin of the Week: Favorite Quote

My all-time favorite quote…a motto to live your life by, even though it can be scary and extremely uncomfortable at times. Amazing things can happen when you push yourself just a bit over the edge.

The Whole9 and Fitness Reflection

Source: s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com via Alexis on Pinterest

A dear friend from my San Diego days always inspired me with her unwavering and unapologetic commitment to fitness and healthy eating. Maybe it was my age and the stage of life I was in at the time, but I could never understand why she’d skip happy hour for her kettle bell class, or pack healthy snacks for a business trip rather than using it as an excuse to indulge in fast food.

I totally get it now.

Kelly B., if you’re reading this, I completely understand why you always stuck to your guns and made time for those workouts and pursued eating habits that make you feel happy, energized, strong… I’ve finally, for the most part, found that “it” place in myself, which is way more mental than physical.

I thought I found the motivation last year, but that was really only about “the big white dress” for my wedding. Like so many brides, the motivation pretty much dried up after the big day and it was a struggle for months to get back into a routine. At some point this year however, I finally realized that taking gym classes go way beyond how my jeans look. Yoga, sculpt, kettle bells, spin…they all drastically reduce my stress levels and lead to healthier choices throughout the day. Do I really need that bagel when I worked so hard at a 7am class? Sometimes the answer is a resounding “hell yes, I deserve that [insert cookie, bagel, ice cream, beer, cocktail, wine, and so on].” But many other times I’ll give it a second thought and reach for some fruit or other nutritious, REAL food instead.

Which leads me to the inspiration for this long post…the Whole9. Kelly B (mentioned above) has a sister who is lovely inside and out. Melissa is someone we can all envy, she is living out her dream to connect with people worldwide to share her knowledge and insane passion for nutrition and fitness. She and her husband founded Whole9, and I was so thrilled to find out that their brand new (and first) book, It Starts with Food, is jumping up the charts.

Admittedly, I have not dabbled in the Whole30 program yet but I would really like to learn more about their approach to food and adapt it for what would be sustainable long-term for me and Mike. I am not interested in weight loss, but I am very interested in evolving my new “no meat, only fish” approach to food to be more all encompassing. Just because I’ve been avoiding meat does NOT mean I’ve been making great food decisions. Not in the least.

Thanks for sticking with me on a longer than normal rant…I’d love to hear if you’ve been exposed to Whole9 and hope you will spread the word about Melissa and Dallas–they are truly an amazing duo and I am so excited for all of their success!

Love: Rachel Rachel Roy Dresses

RACHEL Rachel Roy is the less expensive Rachel Roy brand sold by Macy’s. I am not a big Macy’s shopper, especially since moving to Colorado. Our few locations aren’t nearly as nice as the ones I am used to in Southern California. Which is why I pretty much forgot about how much I love her dresses until I found myself with a few Macy’s gift cards to redeem.

Compared, let’s say, to Anthropologie, RACHEL Rachel Roy dresses are more affordable. They still aren’t cheap, but certainly easier on the wallet than a Nordstrom trip. I ordered the Ellie style below from Macys.com (and I rarely online shop) and was so eager for the box to arrive.

Let me tell you. I am in L.O.V.E. with this dress. It’s actually the second I have from her line and both are now go-to’s in my wardrobe. The quality is surprisingly high and the fit – especially if you are petite – is spot on, no tailoring necessary. For work I paired it with a cardigan but at night or on the weekend it’s going to stand out even more with the small peep hole in the back. The skirt portion does wrinkle if you sit for an extended period of time, but that’s just life with linen.

I absolutely recommend (all on my own, no kick back from Rachel here ~ though I’d totally take it!) giving RACHEL Rachel Roy a shot if you haven’t already…and watch Macys.com for those sales! Next I have my eye on this beauty.

Or maybe this one…

Let’s be honest. I want about 50 of them.

Have you tried anything from her lines yet?

Quandary Peak Adventure

Two fourteeners in two weeks. Yep, that’s how Mike and I roll. This past weekend we spent Saturday in Denver before heading up into the mountains to sleep in Breckenridge and prep for Quandary Peak. Yes, it’s another “easy” fourteener according to the books, but I’m sorry, hiking much above 12,500 feet isn’t that “easy.”

Despite my ever-increasing gym schedule I still find it hard to catch my breath by 13,000 feet and have to take quick breaks in regular intervals. Looking over certain ridges and getting a sense of the exposure (i.e., tumble down a rock field potential) is also eerie, and it can mess with your head for sure. I’ll never have a major mountain climb in my sights, that’s a fact.

As with the other two we’ve done, I hate our decision for most of the ascent and feel so proud and accomplished all the way down and for the rest of the week. By 12:30pm Sunday we had sat atop a peak rising 14,000 feet above sea level and hiked for nearly six hours round trip. I’d say that’s a good Sunday. Hope you enjoy the pictures as much as we enjoyed taking them!
