On Saturday, after five incredible weeks, my mom left to go back home to California. The goodbye was tear-filled but very sweet. She gave Rylan, and us, an incredible gift. Rylan got to grow bigger and stronger for five more weeks after I returned to work before starting daycare. We got to work one-on-one on his routine. She savored every messy moment and took him on adventures to the zoo, lunch, shopping, family play dates and more.
To answer everyone’s questions – yes, she lived with us during this time. Yes, I talked it over with Mike and he embraced the help wholeheartedly. If he felt otherwise it never showed and he made her feel welcomed and appreciated every day. No, I wasn’t ready for her to leave. Yes, it is time for us to rip the bandaid and begin our final transition into parenthood…childcare and all the ups and downs that come with it.
In about an hour Mike and I will be leaving our house, Rylan in tow, to drop him off for his very first day. I’ve opted not to wear mascara today and will probably check my phone 4,000 times for updates from his teacher. He is going to thrive and get the best of both worlds. Daycare Monday – Thursday. A day with his Gigi (Mike’s mom) on Fridays. I have no doubt we made the right decision for our family. And guess what? If we didn’t we’ll fix it! Nothing is permanent.
But for right now, in this moment, I had to post a quick thank you to my mom for all she did. We are so grateful.
Sorry mom, I just had to post this picture. Even though you are crying, you can see how much love you were squeezing into him before you left to start the long drive home. It was a moment I will never forget. We love you. Drive safe!
