The Front Porch

Growing up in the San Fernando Valley (you know, where “valley girls” are from) we never used our front porches much. I really cannot think of anyone on my parent’s block who sits out there on a warm summer night. Everyone is safely tucked away in backyards. All of LA isn’t like that, it’s just the experience I had as a kid.

So imagine my shock when we moved to the Highlands area of Denver and front porches are as, if not more, important than backyards. Parties spill out from kitchens and living rooms onto the front porch. On Saturday and Sunday afternoons you see parents watching little ones play in the front yard while sipping beer and wine from where…the porch of course! I absolutely love the friendly neighborhood culture it creates. Furthermore, money is tight for tackling our monster of a completely bare backyard, so sprucing up our porch seems like a much more realistic endeavor. In fact, we’ve already made great progress by taking advantage of six pots left behind by the former owners!

Given my recent front porch obsession (which is keeping me slightly distracted from how much I want to find a filing cabinet to complete the office and two area rugs to “complete” our upstairs living/dining rooms) I was excited when the June issue of This Old House had several features on outdoor spaces, including porches. When you own a home built in 1928 this magazine is a must have and typically, the products that are recommended are very nice without being ridiculous on the budget meter.

A few finds that got my creative juices flowing included adding a pop of color with two bright chairs like these vintage-looking aluminum seats. We already have two hooks for a porch swing so I want something classic and Americana in nature, to eventually match the color scheme we hope to paint the trim when we find the cash.  This white swing would work just fine.

Back to adding color, I love the thought of hanging a few birdhouses–Anthropologie has some gorgeous Brush Flick Birdhouses online and the latest catalog. Finally, This Old House has some killer ideas for growing fruits and vegetables in pots. Since we won’t be able to get a garden area built in the backyard this year I’d love to use a tiered corner plant stand out front (away from Kona) to try my hand at a few fruits/vegetables that don’t require tons of direct sun.

There is much to do, and even more money to save, but we’re savoring every moment!

Friday’s Pin of the Week: Accents

Throw pillows can instantly change a bed, a couch, a chair ~ anything. But unless you pick them up from Target, Home Goods or potentially Pier 1, they can cost a fortune. Unfortunately for me I have wickedly expensive taste and just when I was going to pull the trigger on a discounted set from One Kings Lane, I chickened out and emptied my cart.

Then I saw this pillow, and a few others, on Dwell Studio. I am not quite sure how I am going to get these out of my head. Instead, I may be saving for a few months to justify this living room accent purchase. The one below caught my eye in particular because it has a great pop of color, but doesn’t include flowers, birds or butterflies, which my hubby can get a little sick of when it overtakes our space. If you click through to see the detailed photo on Dwell Studio, you will see that this pillow has intricate hand stitching and fun textures. Definitely not your average Target find.

Am I alone in my throw pillow obsession?

Craving Greens

No, not veggies…PLANTS!

Succulents are quite trendy right now but I’ve loved them for a long time, mainly because most (I think) do not attract bees. So while I love a gorgeous flowering garden as much as the next person, I am partial to plants that do not attract those frightening, furry, black and yellow little monsters.

Currently we own zero succulents but I am hoping that changes when we find a little budget and time to start paying attention to the outside of our house. Winter is finally over and it was sorely neglected by the previous owners.

In the interim I’ve been noticing that we also have no living things INSIDE the house other than Mike, Kona and myself. Not a single house plant. Not a single planted flower. Nothing, and that is sad.

Ever since making that discovery I’ve been thinking about these cool, modern hanging succulent planters from West Elm. They are simple and clean. I think they would look killer by our back door entry area as well as in one corner of our dining room. Totally unexpected.

On Pinterest I also have a “Green Thumb Envy” board that has been enjoying a lot more attention as the temperatures rise in Denver and ski season gives way to flip flop season.

Overall I am a huge fan of gorgeous pots and planters because they are a lot easier for me to manage compared to an entire garden. Plus, if my blooms look less than stellar, the pot is still gorgeous. Take these beauties for example from Pottery Barn.

Greens aside, I hope our spring — particularly May and June — are filled with peonies. I plan to set aside a little extra “splurge” budget just to keep fresh peonies in our house. Ever since having them in our wedding last year, I have become obsessed. Peonies have become my favorite flower, if only for the sentiment.

Welcome spring, and the greens you will bring.

What are you dying to plant or see sprout out of the ground from your fall garden prep?

Spring Fever

It was 60+ degrees in Denver on Sunday and needless to say, I am ready to put the tall boots away.

Is it Spring yet?

Between a 3rd birthday party, grocery shopping, cleaning the house, and working (all on Sunday), I managed to squeeze in a quick walk with Kona. Our stroll through the neighborhood was the first since we moved into our new house given how cold (okay, we’ve become obscenely lazy) our winter has been. It was nice to see life again…and by life, I mean people running, walking, gardening, etc. My mind quickly wandered to our front and backyard areas. There is so much work to be done!

Planting is something I am only “so so” excited about…blame it on my intense fear of bees. That could be an entirely separate post, or a dedicated blog altogether. Instead I am dreaming about gorgeous outdoor furniture to lounge on starting at dusk, when the bees are far away for the evening.

If I could go on a spring fever outdoor shopping spree right now, it might look something like this…

Pottery Barn: Galvanized Storage Cube

Pottery Barn: Palmetto Wicker Sectional

Restoration Hardware: Carmel Collection

All of these items are well beyond our Wal-Mart and Target price point but I never tire of looking for inspiration. Apparently I am digging metal furniture right now, though I have always wanted an outdoor couch. One day I will have an outdoor sectional from Pottery Barn. It’s a fact.

What do spring temperatures make you crave?

Friday’s Pin of the Week: Pretties

I love flowers. As I get older I have developed a taste for more expensive flowers, go figure. These dahlias are so sweet. I’d love to display them in little jars and vases all over our house, especially the mantels and bathrooms.

Must create flower budget for spring and summer…

Pottery Barn Dreams

Pottery Barn is at the top of my list of stores that I want to “live” in right now. I try so hard to get into online home decor flash sales, kitschy independent stores, etc., but at heart I am truly a big box retail shopper. Scoff all you want, I just like the consistency of products from stores and manufacturers I really know.

Which brings me to my latest Pottery Barn wish list. My husband and mother can attest to the fact that it changes daily (and hourly). Yet, there are specific rooms in our new house that I am positively fixated on…rooms that I am dying to keep adding touches of our style.

The dining room needs a chandelier that makes a statement without costing thousands of dollars or looking like it belongs in our grandmother’s house. I think this beauty would work just fine.

Next up is our bathroom upstairs. Thankfully all the fixtures were updated but the medicine cabinet has to go. It is quite nice but it is way too bulky for how narrow the room is. Why is why I keep hoping this mirror goes on clearance.

Finally, our office is still a mess. This is because we own a bunch of crate-style “filing” boxes and random fire safes, but no large filing cabinet. We could run out and buy a metal cabinet that is there purely for function, but that is not pretty now is it?! So, maybe the tax refund Santa will bring us something along the lines of this.

A girl can hope, and save, and save some more!

Friday’s Favorite Pin of the Week

I spend a lot of time on Pinterest, so I thought, why not try to stick to a “Pin of the Week” post schedule on Fridays and have fun trying to narrow down my favorite image from the past five or seven days. It won’t be easy, but there always seems to be that one pin that really sticks with you…

…like these amazing succulent planters. These would look so chic in our house and I do think I’d have more luck keeping them alive compared to other plants I’ve brought into our home in the past.

I’d love to see what your favorite Pinterest pins are this week too!

Pillow Talk

Let’s pretend money is not an option, or that I won an Anthropologie gift card to spend on home decor items for our new house.

Okay, now that the minor issue of funding is solved, indulge me on drooling over these amazing throw pillows. As I walked through our front door after work one night I realized we need to add a little flair to our new dark brown leather love seat upstairs. One or two of these would do the trick just fine!

I’m extra smitten with the top and bottom pillows because they are not the standard square shape. I envision setting one of them (leaning towards the peacock) right in the middle of the love seat for color, still saving plenty of room for two guests to sit comfortably.

This weekend I hope to hunt for the goodies at our local Home Goods, so maybe I’ll find a great pillow or two at more friendly “new homeowner” prices.

Are you throw pillow obsessed like me, but slightly (or very) appalled at the prices?

Blog Love ~ Jan. 29

heartI wish I could live in half the blogs in my bookmark bar. I am in awe of how bloggers find time to discover beautiful things, but keep up their own site. Do they sleep? Luckily for all of us they must not, which means we get to enjoy prettiness like this.

What posts captured your heart this week?

Blog Love ~ Jan. 22

gold hearts
Another week, another “that is so freaking cool” trip through bloggers-ville.

  • I want to live at Danielle’s (Breakfast at Toast) house, or fly her to Denver to come decorate ours. WOW!
  • Admiring Katie from The Neo-traditionalist and her super chic pixie cut. I am still almost in tears some days because of how short my hair is right now, so I totally love her confidence for being able to go that short.
  • Camille Styles’ Sea Glass color collage embodies the essence of fresh and beautiful.
  • Colorado’s mountains (our second home) are finally getting the snow they so desperately need, so Hip Hip Gin Gin’s Let it Snow fashion and accessories guide came at a great time. I am really needing the navy hooded cardigan.
  • The neon genius on Shoppings My Cardio is more than a week old, but I was a bit behind in my blog reading and literally gasped at how awesome these runway looks are. I would kill to be able to pull this look off, especially because it would be so unexpected based on my typical style.

Have a fabulous Sunday!
