Progress: Living Room

As you can hopefully understand from my blogging hiatus, we’ve been utterly consumed with the new house. From unpacking to organizing to buying furniture, we rarely sit down before 10pm, and promptly fall asleep on the couch.

I am exhausted. My incredible mother was an absolute god send this weekend and I do not think we stopped for longer than 10 minutes from Thursday night to Sunday night. We stocked up on organizational goodies at Bed Bath and Beyond and The Container Store when she arrived on Thursday evening and never looked back. Oh yeah—and she also taught me how to make homemade pasta sauce and meatballs, and we hosted Mike’s parents and sister/Nate/kiddos for a big dinner on Saturday night. I’ll share a separate post about that when I come up for air.

I need a nap just thinking about how productive we were this weekend. I call our newly furnished upstairs the “adult” area. This marks MAJOR progress for us people! American Furniture Warehouse ended up being just the right place for us to get some great furniture (that did not come in a million pieces) without totally breaking the bank. We still need art and accent pieces, but those I want to find over time at small independent shops, while traveling, etc. I also have my heart set on finding a chandelier for the dining room and am obsessed with pretty much every chandelier at Restoration Hardware. That will take awhile to save for, however.

They say pictures are worth 1,000 words, but in the case of my mother’s insane organizing skills, I’d say they are worth at least 100,000… But for now (and to keep the suspense alive), let’s start with the “adult” sitting room. Stay tuned for our dining room, kitchen, bedroom, office and the ridiculously organized kitchen drawers throughout the week (thanks again mom)!

I cannot wait to find and hang new artwork, but am taking a break financially and mentally to focus on other priorities right now. Pictures, clocks and statement accents will come in time!

Please, PLEASE forgive the week long silent treatment on the blog. I miss it terribly and hope to be back in a regular routine very soon. Can’t wait to hear what you think so far! We’ve come a long way from this don’t you think?!

Living in Chaos

Moving + Packed to-do list at work = living in chaos.

Mike’s best friend John was an absolute godsend today. He helped Mike move all of our furniture, all day long. We are so lucky to have friends that are willing to still lift boxes and haul furniture for a fast food lunch and a couple of cold beers. We will be doing everything we can to repay him!

Back to the chaos…this is our life right now. Good thing I didn’t go buy a Christmas tree!

P.S. These are all iPhone photos as I have no clue where our camera is at the moment. You are looking at a portion of our disheveled kitchen, a junk yard of a “living room” and a “dining room” currently filled with our office furniture.

Well, my break is over. Time to finish my work to-do’s and get moving on night #2 of unpacking. Wish me luck!

Backyard Cleanup Update

A few of my regular readers have asked about our backyard and if we were able to tackle the mess we set out to fix in July. In case you need a refresher, “Better Late Than Never” has some cringe worthy photos from the post-wedding disaster back there.

The process took much longer than expected but just in time for the first snow that is being forecast for Wednesday, we’re basically done. Hooray!

Despite the fallen leaves (a daily battle in fall) I am so grateful of all the hard work Mike put into the yard. We are no longer “those white trash neighbors,” or so I hope.

The stone patio turned out beautifully and gives us a nice amount of extra, walkable space for entertaining and eating. The mulch throughout most of the yard was a cheap and easy way to give some continuity to the space and will hopefully limit the number of places that Kona can dig. Finally, Mike rearranged all of the stepping stones to make it infinitely easier to walk through the back to our cars. A “must” for when I am in heels.

This project makes me so excited for the day we own a house and we can tackle home improvement projects together. Though Mike may argue that I am better at nagging about projects than actually getting my hands dirty. I’ll need to work on that!

What home improvement project took you all summer to finish?
